CINEMA AND THE THEATRE

Good quality films are not screened regularly enough in the cinemas in Colombo and elsewhere, but a few cinemas do screen Hollywood and British productions such as some Oscar winners a couple of months later. Film festivals are held by the cultural units of some embassies: French, German, Italian. The American Centre in Colombo 2 and the Indian Cultural Centre in Colombo 4 have film screenings, once a week in the former centre and twice monthly in the latter. The International Centre for Ethnic Studies in Colombo 8 and the Russian Centre in Colombo 7 have once a month screenings. The ICES concentrates on avant-garde, mostly European and Asian films while the Russian Centre screens popular vintage Hollywood and other films. The English theatre is alive and sporadically stages plays, usually comedies. Two symphony orchestras and smaller musical groups cater to the music lover. Video and DVD rental stores are aplenty.
